Every year Frankfurt book Fair presents a new guest of Honour country, a wonderful opportunity to discover a new literature or dig deeper into something already familiar. What does it take to make a memorable presentation? One thing is for certain: you won’t get anywhere without skillful translators. How have different guest of honour countries done to make sure that translators are included in the Guest of Honour process, before, during and after? Four Guest of Honour countries, Finland 2014, Georgia 2018, Norway 2019 and Spain 2022 share best practices on how to work successfully with translators and publishers.

A public reading by the EUPL 2022 award winner and the five EUPL 2022 special mentions. The European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) has helped discover and promote the best emerging fiction writers in Europe since its first edition in 2009. From 2022, an International Jury composed of experts in literature and translation chooses an overall winner and five special mentions. During this event, you will discover the novels of the EUPL 2022 award winner, Iva Pezuashvili (Georgia), and the special mentions Jacobo Bergareche (Spain), Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin (Ireland), Gaea Schoeters (Belgium), Eugenia Kuznetsova (Ukraine) and Slađana Nina Perković (Bosnia Herzegovina).

The EUPL is financed by the Creative Europe Programme of the EU. The EUPL Consortium comprises the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF).

Shorena Lebanidze's book "This is Me – Pirosmani" is an example of artistic-documentary prose. The novel offers a unique literary version of the life of the great Georgian artist, Niko Pirosmani. However, the author's imagination is based on documentary materials obtained from art experts, monographic and archive sources and real information read in the memoirs of Pirosmani's contemporaries. The main essence of the novel is the reflection of the eternal search process of the great artist shrouded in mystery.

Nato Ingoroqva - Poet, Translator. She has published four poetry collections: "And Eva the Poet Lives in Me" (2003), "Dry and Raw" (2011), "Balance" (2013) and "Porcelain Poetry" (2015). She translated and published the poetry of Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke into Georgian. Nato Ingorokva's poetry has been translated into German, English, Latvian, Belarusian, Ukrainian and many other languages. Corvinus Presse (Berlin) has published her two collections of poems. Together with the moderator Dirk Hülstrunk she will present the newest poetry collection "On Words and Reality" to the readers.

Irma Shiolashvili touches on the most diverse areas of life in a way that is entirely her own, but which never lets her forget her origins.

Sow the wheat, Ukraine, says a poem by Georgian poet Eka Kevanishvili, which is a passionate appeal for the freedom of the Ukrainian people. This poem was written by the Georgian who, like all other Georgian authors in this volume, experienced the war and expulsion by the Russians in her own country in order to assure her fellow Ukrainian poets of her solidarity and support. In this anthology, the well-known poets of Ukraine and Georgia stand side by side, each with a poem and a statement on the current war of aggression against Ukraine.

The Georgian capital Tbilisi in the late 1990s and early 2000s... Lekso is studying film criticism, Maia wants to be a dentist. Lekso plays the "dissident game", Maia puts make-up on deceased women because she needs the money. To overcome her fear, she makes up stories about the deceased. Maia finds herself in Lekso's game. Two storylines unfold parallel to each other. The mainstream, where students watch films and explore each other's bodies and sexualities in rooms filled with tobacco smoke. Nestan Nene Kvinikadze's novel 38, 44 gives a deep insight into the fate of a generation of young Georgians who are torn between dream world and bitter reality.

This event is a continuation of a tradition, when Guests of Honour of Frankfurter Buchmesse get together to discuss the Literature. This year two authors from Georgia and Spain together with the German moderator, Barbara Lehnerer will talk about the challenges of writing in the most and in the less spoken languages. It is noteworthy that Iva Pezuashvili is the winner of this year’s EU Literature Prize and the Spanish writer, Jacobo Bergareche got the special mention of the same prize 2022.
